Phil Neville in negotiations with Inter Miami CF - Part of Beckham's increased role?
After a perceived disappointing first season in Major League Soccer where Inter Miami CF were knocked out in the play-in round of the MLS Cup Playoffs, owner and club president David Beckham has taken a bigger role at the club. The new hands-on approach by the 45-year-old could now lead to a coaching change with ESPN reporting that Beckham has spoken to his former Manchester United teammate Phil Neville about the role.
Neville is currently the head coach of the England women's team but is set to leave that position later this year. But with the Olympics delayed, the 43-year-old was set to remain in the position until after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which are scheduled to take place this upcoming summer. Neville and the FA are now working on a solution that would allow the 43-year-old to leave for Inter Miami right away.
Inter Miami CF have previously stated that the future of current head coach Diego Alonso is still being determined. The 45-year-old Uruguayan was deemed a perfect fit when hired ahead of the inaugural season. Still, despite heavy investments and a squad that was among the most valuable in MLS, the club struggled for results and was then eliminated by fellow expansion side Nashville SC in the play-ins.
