Orlando City sign Facundo Torres for record fee - Peñarol star 2nd most valuable in Uruguay
Major League Soccer side Orlando City have completed their mega-deal. On Monday, the Flordia-based club announced that they have signed Facundo Torres from Uruguayan club Peñarol. Torres joins the club as a Young Designated Player and has signed a four-year contract with a club option for 2026. It is a new recorded transfer for the Lions by a significant margin. Peñarol will receive $7.5 million initially and $1.5 million in bonuses (Orlando City record transfers at a glance).
“Facundo is a young player with a lot of potential and upside, and he is just beginning to make waves on the international stage,” Orlando City general manager Luiz Muzzi said in a club statement. “The danger that he creates on attack will be a real asset on the offensive end and we’re excited for him to step on the field in purple.”
In Torres, Orlando City have signed the second most valuable player in Uruguay's first division. Only the 19-year-old Matías Arezo has an even higher market value. The 21-year-old Torres, in the meantime, is already an established star in Uruguay. The winger has scored 16 goals and 15 assists in 71 games for Peñarol. “We’re thrilled to have Facundo join us at Orlando City," Orlando City chairman Mark Wilf said in a club statement. "He is an exciting player with a bright future."
