For a potential record deal - Burnley want to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea

It would be an incredible deal for Burnley. The Premier League side want to spend a club-record transfer fee for Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen. According to a report by The Telegraph, both clubs agreed a transfer on deadline day. But a deal appears to be in the balance with Maatsen originally rejecting a potential move. Should the deal go through, Maatsen will join initially on loan, but the deal will include an obligation to buy that guarantees Chelsea £31.5 million (€37m) including add-ons for the 21-year-old Dutch left-back.

At the moment, Maatsen wants to remain at Chelsea and fight for playing time after a positive start under Mauricio Pochettino. Nonetheless, Burnley are ready to break the bank, and a deal could see Maatsen become the most expensive player in Burnley’s history by a significant margin. Just to put the Maatsen deal into context, the previous record signing for Burnley has been Zeki Amdouni, who joined the club for €18.6m from Swiss Super League club FC Basel.

Recently promoted Burnley believe that Maatsen, whose market value is €12m, is worth the price tag. In fact, Burnley know exactly the type of player they are getting. The left-back who is a product of the PSV Eindhoven and Chelsea academies spent last season on loan at Burnley and managed four goals and six assists in 39 Championship games for the club.

Ian Maatsen to Burnley – Worth a record transfer fee?

But why are Burnley willing to break the bank for Maatsen? “Maatsen one was of the most important players in Vincent Kompany’s possession system and has the freedom to be creative in the attack to use his speed and passing ability,” Area Manager UK Daniel Bush said. “But he also improved significantly in his defensive play and mentality and has become a complete wing-back. Without a doubt, his market value will grow significantly in the Premier League this season.”
