Arsenal interested in Atlético’s Thomas - Release clause on level of market value
Because of Mikel Arteta’s coronavirus infection, off pitch matters currently dominate the headlines at Arsenal. In the background, the club is already working for the Spaniard to have a strong team next season, however. As The Telegraph report, especially Thomas is on the Gunners’ radar.
Arsenal reportedly consider signing the 26-year-old Ghanaian, who is under contract at Atlético Madrid until 2023. Thomas is understood to be high up the list of potential new signings, as the Londoners want to rebuild their squad in the summer – a new signing for the position in defensive midfield has the highest priority for Arteta.
Should the player be interested in a move to Arsenal, a release clause in his contract could simplify a premature departure. It is believed to amount to almost €51 million – with a market value of €50 million, the 20-time international is currently one of the most valuable players in his position.
“Interest from an English club” in Thomas
Already last summer, important players left Atlético through release clauses, which are mandatory in Spain. Antoine Griezmann (FC Barcelona), Lucas Hernández (Bayern Munich) and Rodri (Manchester City) alone brought in a total of €270 million. According to the report, Thomas could join that list soon. An unknown source at Wanda Metropolitano stated that there is “interest from an English club”.
